Heraldic Crests:  The family crests, or Mon, of Japanese heraldry trace their origins back to before 700AD as emblems on banners of Japanese emperors.  Use of emblems as family crests spread first to court nobility and later to members of the warrior class. Military reports of battles often identified forces by naming their emblems. Their use spread to decoration of clothing, armor, and castles and shrines.
