Interlocking designs
are among the oldest motifs in Chinese culture. They appear in woven silk,
on paintings, porcelain bowls and utensils, and as wooden screens that
enclose viewing porches beside Chinese gardens. Some patterns are knots
without start or end, symbolizing eternity. Others are imitative of wave
patterns or form intricate “key” patterns.
