East West Classics by MeiLan: Neckwear and Jackets that Truly are Art
East West Classics neckties, jackets and accessories are the creations of Mila Tsang, a Chinese-American artist and designer who lived and studied Chinese and Japanese art in Nanjing, China Osaka and Kobe Japan. Following an old tradition, Mila was given the "painting name" MeiLan by her Chinese calligraphy in Nanjing. The characters Mei and Lan from the chop (seal) carved by her teacher serve as her logo.
MeiLan draws inspiration for her ties and fabric design from the breadth of Chinese and Japanese traditions and arts, including traditional folk batik (La Ran) and paper cuttings; the art of ceramic and lacquer decoration; Oriental architectural detail and temple decoration; as well as Chinese and Japanese fine arts of painting and sculpture. MeiLan has also travelled extensively through Asia and Southeast Asia, enjoying and absorbing the beauty of the traditional arts.
More recently, she has begun to look to other parts of the globe for beautiful patterns to transform into great ties and fabric for her jackets and accessories. The first fruits of this are the new Celtic knot ties, scarves, and handbags now available. More continents and cultures will be represented soon.
The beautiful silk and cotton/silk jackets, and 100% silk handbags and scarves designed by MeiLan are sewn by her in limited quantities, some one-of-a-kind, in the USA. Most jackets are trimmed with silk fabric designed by and woven for MeiLan. The East Lake kimono jackets are sewn by MeiLan using special Hangzhou silk, which she carries back to the U.S., in several distinctive patterns and trimmed with the reverse side of the silk, for a gorgeous positive negative effect.
