Shou
is the Chinese word
for longevity, and as such is seen over and over in Chinese designs and
decorations. Because it is so auspicious, Shou has been stylized into over
one hundred variations, including the two that make up this design. One of
these is seen as the shape of a bat, which is good luck in Chinese culture.
This
Wave Pattern
is based on one of the most popular Chinese and Japanese batik patterns.
In China, water is said to possess eight qualities: it is clear, cool,
healing, soothing, odorless, delicious, light, and soft. The subtle shapes
of the watery Waves can be very expressive; and one can almost feel the calm
of the Waves in the moonlight.
